South Ukrainian NPP Unit-1 lifetime extension: problematic and dangerous

24 September 2012 – Briefing paper about problems with South Ukrainian NPP Unit 1 (SUNPP-1) was prepared and presented during CSOs meeting with the EBRD Board Directors in Kiev.

European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) currently is considering EUR 300 million loan to NEC Energoatom for Ukraine Nuclear Power Plant Safety Upgrade Programme (NPP SUP) which among other includes upgrades to SUNPP-1 – the unit that reaches the end of its design lifetime alredy in December 2012. Despite overwhelming safety considerations, Ukrainian government plans to extend operational lifetime of SUNPP -1 for extra 20 years and EBRD money will be used to prepare reactor for such extension.
