Protests against Ukraine’s position as a nuclear dump in front of the Cabinet of Ministers

12 March 2012, Kyiv – On the occasion of the Fukushima NPP accident anniversary Ukrainian people initiated the protest against continued use of deteriorated nuclear reactors and establishment of new dangerous nuclear facilities. Public environmentalists explained why the Fukushima NPP accident scenario is highly probable for Ukraine. The public is coming down on the Ukrainian Parliament’s decision to place the centralized storage of spent nuclear fuel in Kyiv region. On February 9, the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine took the decision to approve the Draft Law on Spent Fuel Management as to Placement, Design and Construction of the Centralized Storage of Nuclear Fuel Used by VVER Reactors of the NPPs supported by the majority of votes of the people’s deputies in the second reading. more…

Further construction at Khmelnytsky NPP comes to a standstill

N. Azarov’s government has failed to provide state guarantees for the possible financing for nuclear power plant construction of national significance

The idea of the loan from the Sberbank of Russia for the completion of Nuclear Unit 3 and 4 at Khmelnitsky NPP, as well as the associated issue of providing appropriate state guarantees from the government of Ukraine will be discussed within a framework of the committee for economic cooperation of Ukrainian-Russian interstate commission.

Relevant recommendations were given to the committee based on the results of meeting of the subcommittee for nuclear power on May 19 in Moscow, “I” quoted the director of separate division of SE “NNPC Energoatom” – “Atomproektinzhiniring” Vladimir Bronnikov, as saying. more…

Environmentalists of Russia and Ukraine call on Sberbank not to finance Khmelnytska NPP

Today, environmental organizations of Ukraine and Russia have sent an open letter to Sberbank of Russia CEO and Board Chairman, German Gref, urging him to renounce plans to grant loan for completion of new reactors at Khmelnytska nuclear power plant (Khmelnytska NPP). In a joint statement the Russian organization Ekozashchita! (Ecodefense) and National Ecological Centre of Ukraine point out that the completion project for Units 3 and 4 carries significant risks in financial, technical and environmental terms, as well as a significant reputational risk to Sberbank. more…

Construction of Unit-3 and Unit-4 at Khmelnytska NPP has not yet started but the cost has already increased 2.5 times

Kyiv, 15 February 2011 – Energoatom and Atomstroyeksport signed a contract to supply reactor equipment for power Unit-3 and Unit-4 at Khmelnytska nuclear power plant. However, the cost for completion of Khmelnytska NPP grows with each new report.

On 09 February, Energoatom and Russian Atomstroyeksport signed a contract concerning the development of technical design for reactor facility and supply of reactor facility equipment for Unit-3 and Unit-4 at Khmelnytska NPP. more…
